New iPad's lack of a new name leaves Apple enthusiasts puzzled

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 06:02 AM PST

Apple's introduction of the latest iPad has left Madison Avenue, and Silicon Valley, scratching their heads. While some pundits predicted the device announced Wednesday would be called the iPad 3 -- and others said iPad HD -- Apple threw a curveball and didn't use a specific moniker for its latest upgrade. Rather, the company simply called it "the new iPad."The company didn't provide a detailed explanation. Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, simply said that Apple broke from the convention "because we don't want to be predictable."Branding experts said the lack of a new name is potentially confusing, given the fact that the company has given new names or tweaks to its line extensions before."It does seem to be a bit confusing, when you have a product evolution naming is a way to differentiate," said Charles Rashall, president & founder of Brandadvisors, a branding firm in San Francisco. The new name is "communicating that they are going backwards."Some attendees at the device's San Francisco unveiling, hosted by Chief Executive Tim Cook, seemed confused, too. For years, Apple has named new iPhones with new model numbers. The initial iPad gave way to the iPad 2, which will remain on sale at a lower price following the arrival of the new model. It has used subnames, not numbers, for its iPod product line, which has different-sized hardware. It currently sells an iPod nano and iPod touch. An Apple spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to request for comment about the possibility of naming confusion. The company also surprised customers last fall by naming its latest iPhone the 4S instead of iPhone 5. It had, however, taken a similar approach when it upgraded the iPhone 3 to the 3S.The lack of a new name quickly became a hotly debated topic on the Twitter website. "Let's be honest, the name "The New iPad" is already a $10 billion mistake, black eye on the Tim Cook era, and it's an hour old," read one typical post.Ad experts predict that consumers will eventually call the product the iPad 3

The Walking Dead (season 2)

Posted: 08 Mar 2012 01:24 AM PST

Plot
The second season begins with Rick and his group of survivors choosing to leave Atlanta to the walker. They decide that For Benning would be their next destination. Along the way, they come across a traffic jam of abandoned vehicles on I-85. The group loots several vehicles and as a large horde of walkers approach, are forced to hide under the vehicles. Sophia, chased away from the camp by one of the remaining walkers, runs off into the woods. Carl is accidentally shot during the initial search. The remaining group deals with interpersonal relationships while various searches for Sophia are performed. Otis, the man who shot Carl, leads Rick and Shane to a large, isolated farm owned by a veterinarian named Hershel Greene. The survivors move to the farm while Carl recovers. Rick's group tries to co-exist alongside Hershel's family, but dangerous secrets and disagreements over leadership cause tensions to rise. Glenn builds a romantic relationship with one of Hershel's daughters. He also discovers that Hershel's barn is full of walkers. When Shane forces the walkers out of the barn and the group open fire, Sophia appears, as a walker, and is shot by Rick.

Hershel, reacting to what has happened, orders Rick and his group to leave immediately, before disappearing to grieve for his family. Daryl begins to withdraw from the group. Rick and Glenn go searching for Hershel and discover him drinking heavily in a local tavern. After trying to persuade Hershel to return, two other men enter the bar: survivors from another group. The situation rapidly turns sour and there is a brief but bloody gunfight which leaves the two new survivors dead. The dead men's former group quickly finds and opens fire on Rick, Hershel, and Glenn at the bar. The noise of the firefight attracts a large horde of walkers, and in their desperation to get away, the other group of survivors leave one of their members, Randall, behind. Rick cannot stand the thought of leaving him to be killed by walkers, so the three blindfold him and take him to the farm. However, once they get him there, they realize that he could lead the remainder of his former group to the farm. Rick decides to drive Randall into the countryside to abandon him, but is attacked by walkers during a disagreement with Shane. Hershel's daughter Beth tries to kill herself in order to escape a seemingly hopeless situation. The group deliberate over the fate of Randall, and despite Dale's protests, decide to execute him. Carl begins experimenting in danger, and is found watching Rick as he prepares to execute Randall. Dale is fatally wounded by a walker, and as a result is killed by Daryl as an act of mercy.
